Nurturing GreatnessA Unified School Design Model
The Nurturing Greatness System™ is not a program or a set of initiatives. It is a unified school design model developed by Drs. Tonya Breland and Erika Leak that operationalizes research into daily practices for teachers and leaders.
Built on Four Core Design Concepts
Each concept shapes the structure of learning environments and educator practice across the entire school system.
Inquiry
Scholars learn by asking deep questions, investigating, and constructing understanding.
Real-World Problem Solving
Learning is connected to authentic challenges that matter beyond the classroom.
Identity Development
Every scholar's sense of self, culture, and belonging is affirmed and cultivated as an academic asset.
Strengths-Based Learning
Instruction is designed to recognize and build on scholars' gifts, talents, strengths, and interests.
The Research Behind the System
The Nurturing Greatness System™ is grounded in six interdisciplinary research foundations that transform academic mastery into brilliance and impact — leading to scholar success.
Science of Learning and Development
Learning is developmental, relational, and shaped by experience.
Constructivist Learning Theory
Students build understanding through active exploration and meaning-making.
Sociocultural Learning Theory
Learning is shaped by social interaction, culture, and community context.
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
Instruction that honors and leverages students' cultural identities.
Self-Determination Theory
Fostering autonomy, competence, and relatedness to drive intrinsic motivation.
Strengths Science
Identifying and cultivating each individual's unique gifts and talents.
